I have yet to see a Digital Theater in my area, but a few say Digital will replace film, how will they show it at the movie Houses? When Starwars 2 come out will Luacs have it tranfer on film to show it in the movie house? Isn't most move houses set up for Film?

This topic seems to come up every once and while and I think we all know that digital will never replace film...the two work very closely together. Many blockbuster movies that are shot on film are transfered to digital for editting then back to film. There is no generation loss and you can add all those fancy effects that Hollywood loves to use and keep the good depth of field and colors that film has. Both formats are fine, it just depends on what you want to shoot and how you want your final project to look.

Digital theatres is the way to go. You can get about 8 really great prints from a Negative. Which means by the time a print arrives in my local theatre in Wales, the quality is not so great. Digital theatres would allow a print as clear as DVD.

Hi,
I saw a digital presentation of Toy Story 2 using the Texas DLP system. I know it was animation and made on a computer etc but the quality was amazing.
Withe reference to the 'Lucas' project, because most cinemas are not yet equipped to show digital movies, he is instead using it to cut out a number of stages in the film developing process, thus improving picture and saving time.

What I do know about this is that it's too expencive at the moment. Digital theatres cost a lot of money, I think it's a ?100k per digital projector and they only last 5 years (I think) untill the mirrors have to be replaced...and thats also very expencive...at the moment it won't pay for cinemas to have these projectors...expecially how cinema figures have dropped lately, film will be around for a few years yet...

The prototype is something called FRACTAL Theater.
Sort of like a Rob Zombie concert.
A stage play going on in front of and in interaction with a Dodger visionesque screen in the background or as part of a set. Laser lights. or what have you. But it has a structure as would a studio movie or a Play. and is designed to be taken on the road or moved but would be for the most part a one spot structure dependent setup like the local movie house. or melodrama.
For example a live actor is walking down a computer generated or enhanced or edited street having a conversation with a the same type of thing on the screen. The actor walks off stage left or out into the audience. The Computer enhanced screen person; Keeps talking then turns into a bunny rabbit and hops off.
Minor changes in the screen display make it possible for an actor to seem to walk through a door and have it close behind him when actually he is still on stage in front of the screen on stage. he just can not be seen because of screen color manipulation costume and lighting effects, he remains unseen at a given distance until it is time for him to walk out of the screen door again.
Keeps flies out too.
I can not remember the name of the person who started it but it looks neat.
